Gene Beed MD
CEO and President
Gene Beed, M.D., is President of
horses, zebras & unicorns
inc., a consulting and
communications company that specializes in managed care.
Health care professionals know Gene best for his moderating of
debates, dialogues and expert panels on numerous health care issues.
He also is an author, penning monographs and compendia for
clients such as the NCQA.
Dr. Beed was formerly Corporate Associate Vice President of Medical
Informatics for FHP International Corporation.
During his seven-year tenure at FHP, Dr. Beed served in a
variety of roles; from Utilization Management to Quality Improvement
to CMO of staff model HMOs in Guam and California.
Before joining FHP, Dr. Beed, a Board Certified Pediatrician,
established his own successful private practice in Victorville,
California.
Dr. Beed was born in Chicago, Illinois,
and raised there. He
holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Summa Cum Laude, from
Loyola University of Chicago, and an M.D. degree, with Honors, from
the University of Illinois.
He received internship and residency training at Milwaukee
Children's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Valley Children's Hospital in Fresno, California.
Dr. Beed was selected a Sayre McNeil and Dean’s Scholar in
1992 at Loyola Law School, Los Angeles.
Gene Beed has spoken on three
continents. He has
presented on topics ranging from the “Application of Utilization
Guidelines” to British health care managers in
London, England to “The Cost of Health Care in America” at the Shiga
University
Medical
School in Otsu, Japan.
Dr.
Beed chaired the Utilization Subcommittee of the NCQA Report Card
Project. He is a past
member of the Board of Directors for the
Irvine Child Development
Center, and the Children's
Discovery Museum of Orange County.
He has served as an elected representative and treasurer for
the Irvine Unified
School District's Brywood School Site
Council, and on Orange
County's Measure M
Citizen's Oversight Committee as a representative for the Fifth
supervisory district.
Dr. Beed is
married to Dr. Margaret Beed, also a board certified pediatrician
and currently Health Officer for San Bernardino County.
They have three children, a German shepherd, and live in Irvine, California.
